ZIMTA to participate in Global Action Week PDF Print E-mail

The Zimbabwe Teachers' Association is set to join the rest of the world in the Global Action Campaign for Education which is scheduled for 19 - 25 April 2013. The theme for this year's campaign is "Every Child Needs a Teacher:Trained Teachers For All.".

Global Campaign for Education and Education International identified the theme in a report entitled 'Every Child Needs a Teacher: Closing the trained teacher gap' which revealed the severity of the trained teacher gap, its impact on educational systems and made recommendations in closing this gap.


The aim of the campaign is to make sure that each and every child has access to a trained teacher.
Global Action Week is a worldwide annual campaign organised by the Global Campaign for Education to raise awareness of the importance of quality of education for all.


The campaign demands that national governments should


• Ensure that all teachers are being paid a decent salary, professional wage; negotiate and agree pay scales with teacher unions; do not use pay as a system of individualised punishment and reward based on high stakes testing or other 'merit' pay.
• Allocate a minimum of 20% of national budgets or 6 %of GDP , to education and ensure that at least 50% of this is dedicated to basic education, with a much higher percentage outside
• Undertake a gender review of National Sector Plans, and develop long term strategies to recruit train support and compensate women teachers.
