3 Million Dollar Scholarships Set Aside for Teachers: Dokora PDF Print E-mail

Government has set aside, a total of 3 million dollars in scholarships, for the Teacher Capacity Development Project, set to commence before the December 2014 school holidays.

Addressing teachers attending the World Teachers’ Day celebrations in Bulawayo, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr. Lazarus Dokora said, the program was meant to professionalize the teaching service and to return its lost glory.
Dr. Dokora indicated that the disciplines that had been listed to benefit under this project were in (1) Sciences and Mathematics,(2) Curriculum Research and Development, (3) Educational planning, Building and Design, (3).Technical and Vocational Education, (5) Languages, (6) Humanities, (7) Information Communication Technology and (8)Pedagogy.
Turning to the selection criteria, the minister noted that the selection of participants would be based on voluntarism and on a first come first served  principle.
“As applicants will be on full time schedulesat their schools, negotiations are underwayto make sure that their salaries are not reduced by the employer,” said Dokora.
In his address to the teachers, Dr. Dokora   went on to announce that next year, there would be special awards on World Teachers’ Day and that the celebrations would be a   collective for all unions.
On the issue of curriculum reviews, the minister of primary and secondary education, highlighted that the ministry was emphasizing on a Curriculum Review  Program, whose objectives were, to decentralize information in the 1999 CIET recommendations, to share information on implementation strategies, to collect new information on possible changes, to elicit stakeholder input in curriculum, to engage stakeholders on the implementation strategies and to align the curriculum with the country’s developmental needs and ZIM Asset Requirements.
At least 3 000 attended the main  World Teachers’ Day celebrations held at Large City Hall in Bulawayo on Friday October 3.
